What Equipment Do I Need for My Home Gym?
This seems a lot more complicated than it is. A home gym is something that develops with you and your workouts. As your workouts evolve and expectations of the type of fitness you engage in change, your gym equipment and exercise flooring for home gym will change.
There is no single set of workouts for everyone and as your expectations, fitness, abilities, availability to work out and age change so will your fitness routine. Different demographics (i.e., age, weight, gender, physical abilities) have different fitness needs and will require space and equipment that is specific to their needs. For example, middle aged professionals probably workout in shorter durations, will have lower impact workouts. This demographic will use recumbent bikes, treadmills, light dumbbells, yoga mats, or perhaps a rowing machine. We know this is a fuzzy answer, but the truth is that there is no one “cookie cutter” description for everyone. The size of your space, your age, your goals, and your physical limitations all play into the type of equipment that you can use and the type of flooring that can be placed on it. This is why we have come up with a list of typical locations a home gym is built, as well as a list of standard equipment that normally are used and housed in home gyms.
How to Start Building Your Home Gym?
- Start by picking a room or an area (indoor or outdoor), then select our workout type(s) and then select your equipment.
-
- Garage
- Basement
- Master bedroom (section of it)
- Extra bedroom
- Family room (section of it)
- Backyard
- Outdoor deck or balcony
- Then decide what kind of workouts do you want to engage in? Here are some options in equipment and exercises.
-
- Treadmill
- Elliptical
- Yoga
- Light calisthenics
- Heavy weightlifting
- Kettlebells
- Dumbbells
- Barbel and weights
- Bench
- Home gym machines
- Stationary bike
- Rowing machine
- Online exercise classes (e.g., jazzercise or salsa)
- Stretching
- CrossFit
- Pilates
- Circuit training
- Gyms can be as small as a 4×6 gym mat without equipment to do calisthenics while streaming an instructor. Or they can be as large as an entire 20ft by 20ft garage with multiple stations, machinery and free weight equipment. Decide on what kind of workouts you intend to preform, and you can match the room size with your expectations of the equipment types.

Is Building a Home Gym Worth It?
The answer to this question is 100% yes! You will save money, time and will work out more in a space that is clean and uncrowded and super accessible.
You will save money by investing in gym equipment and accessories that should last you for years. In addition, the endless monthly payments to a national chain gym will not land as a transaction on one of your credit cards. For under a $1,000 you should be able to build a nice home gym, meaning the equipment, flooring. This is money invested in hard assets and if you own your home, it is a useful room that will add value to your real estate investment. A home gym is something that can be used by everyone in your family and this will probably reduce the expenditure on outside gym memberships.
In addition, you will save time, you don’t have to drive to a gym and will save time by stepping into your own fitness room anytime of the day. Most gyms can be 15-20 minutes away from your living room; by adding a gym to your house, you are saving 30-40 minutes in travel time. This is valuable time that you can spend with family, friends, or workout a bit longer. The accessibility of the home gym allows you to work out even on the days that you may not have the motivation needed for a long training session. You can get on that stationary bike for 20 minutes just to get the kinks out of your body and there is no need to waste time driving to a gym.
In your home fitness room, you will not have to wait for a machine or equipment. You will not have to queue up to get on a treadmill! And now with the advent of YouTube, the list of free classes online is enormous, and you can take any class, anytime you desire, and you are not bound by the availability of an instructor or a class type. A home gym is exercise on demand. Want to take a yoga class, how about jazzercise, salsa, belly dance and the list goes on forever. Your local gym will never have this range of options, and the timeline that will fit your exact timing needs. You can take any class anytime you are ready for that specific class.
What Types of Gym Flooring are Available?
First you need to decide on the type of exercise flooring for your home gym. The options are:
-
- Home Gym flooring rolls: These are generally 3-ft or 4-ft wide and can be purchased in custom lengths up to 50 continuous feet. Their customized nature makes them super easy to install. Using some double-sided tape on the perimeter of the rolls is all that is needed, and this will ensure that the ends don’t curl up. Your just unroll the rubber flooring rolls into your designated location and apply the tape. In longer lengths, the rubber rolls will be heavier, hence will need someone with some physical strength to handle them. For example, a ¼” rubber roll that is 4ft by 10ft will weigh about 50lbs. Since rolling thicker materials is tougher, rubber flooring rolls are generally available in 3/8” thickness or thinner. Hence, rolls are limited the thickness and if your needs are for thicker and more protective flooring, then rolls may not work for you. The beauty of rubber flooring rolls is that you can purchase them in any length or size you want. As noted, the rolls are 4ft-by-50ft in size. But we can cut the product in virtually any length needed.
-
- Home gym rubber floor tiles: Rubber tiles are available in thicker options. Interlocking gym mats can be available as thick as 1-inch and as thin as 1/4″ thick. Since rubber tiles interlock to one another, glue or adhesives are not needed. This makes them much easier to grasp for the residential user. However, interlocking tiles will have a lot more seams once installed. For obvious reasons, rubber tiles will show seams on all four sides. Having said that, even the thickest Interlocking tiles are lighter and easier to assemble. If you damage a rubber tile, home gym rubber floor tiles are easier and less expensive to replace. You would just remove the one tile and easily add the new tiles in its place.
-
- Stand-alone rubber mats: These are exactly what the name suggest. Rubber mats in smaller sizes and these can range from 3ft-by-4ft to a 4×6 rubber gym mat. Usually, this product is used in spaces that don’t require wall-to-wall flooring or if added floor protection is needed in smaller and specific areas. The question to ask of yourself do you intend to cover the entire room with flooring or just have gym flooring under the gym equipment. Perhaps you want a mat under your treadmill or a 4×6 gym flooring under your weightlifting bench. If you don’t intend to cover your existing subfloor fully with rubber surfacing, then you can purchase a combination of products to suit the needs to the equipment and their footprint. 4×6 gym mats are popular due to their thickness and protective features and are all the rage especially for heavy impact areas. Buying rubber gym mats for areas of your home gym is a cheaper and quicker installation and launch of your gym.

What to Put Under Home Gym Flooring?
Rubber gym flooring does not require any underlayment or other protective layer. Rubber home fitness flooring is a protective and cushioned product itself. If you feel like you need something that is more cushioned or thicker, then there are lot of options available as an added extra layer on top of your flooring and there is no need to add underlayment. We offer gym floors from 2mm thick to 1” thickness and almost everything in-between. If you need to protect your subfloors, then it may be a good idea to add thickness to areas that may see more impact and abrasion. For example, if you are installing an area for deadlifts, then adding an extra thick mat or two (i.e., 3/4″ 4×6 workout mat) in that area is very smart. There is no need to add thick rubber mats across the entire gym. Adding thick and heavier tiles across your gym floors makes the project more expensive.
“Tuff-n-Lastic” Anti-Slip Flooring
- Naturally slip-resistant rubber material
- Affordable DIY installation in custom-cut lengths
- Prevents slips and falls with pebbled surface texture
- Cost-effective mats for high-traffic commercial entrances
- 3MM (or 1/8”) thick rubber mat protects interior floors from damage during wet winters!
Durable Anti-Slip Flooring: Rubber material has a high natural coefficient of friction, but these rubber runner mats provide even more traction with their pebble-top surface textures. Install this flooring in commercial entryways or outdoor walkways to increase traction and slip resistance, thereby preventing accidents and injuries.
Easy Custom Installation: Tuff-n-Lastic can be purchased in pre-cut or custom-cut lengths up to 50 feet. Buy these rubber runners in dimensions that correspond with the size of your floor area. Save yourself the cost of extra material and make installation easy by purchasing the exact amount of anti-slip flooring you need in half-foot increments.
Why is Rubber the Recommended for Gym Floors?
Rubber flooring is the premier type of flooring used in home and commercial gyms. Here are the main reasons rubber flooring offers all the qualities that gym facilities need. Commercial or home gym rubber floor products are:
-
- Cushioned and comfortable
- Impact absorbent
- Moisture resistant and will not be affected by water
- Unlike carpet or wood, rubber will not rot or decay when left moist wet over time
- Rubber floors will not harbor mold or fungi
- Rubber flooring is also very cost effective
- Eco-friendly: Most often made from recycled rubber raw materials
- Rubber mats protect the surface below and the equipment above
- Easy to install and are a “Do It Yourself” flooring product
- Less expensive and quicker to deploy because an installer is not needed
- Rubber floors can be used indoor or outdoor
- Fitness facilities damage floors due to heavy use, rubber is easy to replace
“Diamond Plate” Roll Rubber Matting
- Made from 100% weather-resistant SBR
- Diamond-Plate surface pattern adds extra traction
- Great for busy commercial retail entrances and walkways
- Non-slip rubber matting is incredibly lightweight and flexible
- Affordable rubber mat with excellent durability indoor or outdoor
Water and Mold Resistance: Protect residential, commercial, or industrial floors from water damage by installing rubber mats with a high natural coefficient of friction. Water-resistant rubber matting repels moisture and prevents mold growth in wet environments. Installing non-slip matting is an easy way to protect warehouses, basements, and outdoor walkways from any moisture, including seasonal rains and flooding.
Money-Saving Installation: Available in pre-cut or custom-cut lengths up to 50 feet, Diamond-Plate rubber matting saves you time by eliminating hidden costs—specifically the extra costs of unused material, messy adhesives, and professional installers. Buy these rubber floor mats in the dimensions you need and use a double sided for an effective semi-permanent adhesion.
Do You Need to Glue Down Gym Flooring?
Gluing down your home gym mats is not recommended, regardless of the type. Adhesives are a lifetime commitment and if you decide to remove the product due to damage or to change the flooring, or to move your glued gym floors to another location, the job is nearly impossible. It is also not necessary since home or even most commercial fitness flooring can easily be installed with double-side carpet tape.
Most rubber floors and mats are heavy. For example, our Elephant Bark Rubber flooring rolls, a product that is very popular with home gyms, is sold in 5mm, 1/4″ and 3/8” thicknesses. This product is 48-inches wide and can be purchased in any length up to 50 feet. Assuming that you are looking for a 10-footer if this rolled product here are the weights for each thickness:
5mm by 48” by 10ft – 45lbs
1/4” or 6.4mm by 48” by 10ft – 50lbs
3/8” or 9.5mm by 48” by 10ft – 80lbs
Rubber gym flooring is heavy enough to stay down under its own weight and for good measure you can add some double-side tape to the permitter areas and the entry points. By the time you put equipment or furniture on top and apply the two-sided carpet tape the floors should be secure.
For obvious reason gluing down interlocking tiles is also not recommended. Interlocking rubber tiles are modular floors and if you are buying them, you are clearly purchasing something that is made to assemble and disassemble quickly. We highly discourage you from gluing down any type of interlocking tiles.
DIY Home Gym Flooring, How to Get Started!
When you are ready to start your home gym, the first thing that needs to go in are your gym mats or flooring. Gym equipment tends to be heavy, so adding in your rubber flooring in advance of the equipment is a necessity. First you need to decide if you intend to cover the entire space with new flooring or will you be installing rubber mats just under the footprint of your equipment (e.g., treadmills, stationary bikes), benches, weight equipment, or stretching zones. There is no need to cover an entire room if you intend to leave your current flooring in place and if you are happy with the aesthetic of your current floors. All home gym floors will have budget, aesthetic (e.g., colors, rolls vs. tiles) and floor protection (i.e., rubber flooring thickness) needs that should be answered by the end user. These are more of aesthetic questions and there is no right or wrong answer. Gym flooring is functionally designed to protect floors from impact, moisture, scuffs and foot traffic. Otherwise, adding thickness by adding layers on top of impact area is a very smart choice. Deadlift areas, or spaces that use heavy barbells are an example of spaces that could use thick rubber floors or extra coat of flooring.
If you decide just to cover the footprint of your equipment areas or areas you want to use for yoga or calisthenics, then measure these areas. These areas can be covered with custom-cut rolls or can have interlocking tiles floor the space. In case of a treadmill, let’s assume that the footprint of it is 36” x 72”. In this case you can have a rubber mat cut to slightly a longer width and length, for example 42” x 80”. We custom cut almost all our products. Let us know exactly what you want, and we will handle the rest. For a weight bench, expect to cover a wide area than the bench. If you are using a barbel, then perhaps 6-to-12 inches longer than the length of the barbel. Areas that are used for yoga, stretching, or floor exercises will require softer floors. We suggest our “Revolution Tiles” for an area of this size and a space that is at least 9ft-by-9ft. These exercises require that you expand your wings or perhaps setup a couple of stations when executing the planned workout, so expect to need a larger footprint here.
The second possibility is covering the entire room with rubber gym flooring. Obtaining the dimensions of the room is the first step and this helps you price out the cost of your home gym mats quickly. If you have a rectangular or square shaped room, you need the width and length of the room to be measured. Once you have these two distances, you can multiply the two sides and get the overall square footage of the space. If you intend to floor the entire space with rubber floors, then knowing the width and length will help figure out how the layout of the floors. If you do have angles and odd shaped corners, it is best to draw your plans up and submit them to our Customer Care staff (customercare@rubbercal.com), who will study the design and offer advice on how best to tackle the installation of your floors. If you have a difficult time here, you can reach out to our customer care team for help (1-844-Rubber-4). They can guide you through the process of measuring, finding out the total footage, offering suggestion on rolls vs. tiles as well as the best product for your needs.
“Revolution” Interlocking Flooring Tiles
- Very durable in outdoor playgrounds
- Multiple sizes offer options for any sized slide area
- Landing area surface wear is transferred to the rubber mat
- A completely moisture resistant mat
- Knobbed surface texture adds slip-resistance
Durable Outdoors: Since the rubber playground slide mats are made from natural and reclaimed rubbers, they are designed to last outdoors in any condition. Moisture will not affect this playground slide mat. And being a tire derived product, this rubber mat has excellent weathering characteristics.
Non-Slip Rubber Mat: The rubber playset slide mat is non-slip and will protect oncoming foot-traffic from slips and trips when they exit the slide. Having a non-slip rubber mat at the bottom of the slide will help catch the onrushing feet and decrease slipping accidents. The combination of the high coefficient of friction of rubber and the surface texture of the rubber matting combine to make for a very slip-resistant mat.
How Do You Cut Rubber Flooring Rolls?
Cutting rubber flooring seems more complicated than it is. All you need is a good quality utility knife, a straight edge as a guide, safety gloves and some patience. Once you have measured the length you intend to cut, place the straight edge across the roll of rubber and press your utility knife against the ruler. The ruler will guide your knife down. Don’t press too hard on the rubber flooring and expect to score the rubber a few times (the thicker the rubber, the more scoring is needed) prior to piercing through. Do not pull the rubber to rip it clean, keep cutting across the line until you have made a clear and cut across the part. Remember to wear cut proof gloves on both hands. The most common injuries happen to the leg or fingers on the non-cutting hand. Go slow, there is no rush if you intend to produce a clean-cut roll, you need to score the rubber several times before you pierce through it. Remember, safety is more important than anything else.

What is the Best Color for Gym Floors?
Rubber fitness flooring is now available in a vast range of colors. Black rubber flooring is the go-to and the least expensive. Colored gym floors tend to get more expensive, so budgets tend to reduce the demand for them. Most rubber workout flooring is made from recycled tire crumb, and coloring recycled rubber is not easy. Most rubber tiles and rolls made from recycled rubber are generally black or have a large black crumb rubber content. For example, our Elephant Bark rubber flooring rolls are available in a specked version, but the speckled option cover only 17%-20% of the total area of the rolls. This makes speckled tiles and rolls mostly black in color and less of a true single colored rubber floor. Rubber flooring will be the least expensive when black is the main or the dominant color, regardless of it being in tiles or roll form.
If your decision is based on aesthetics, then you should consider the mood a color puts you in. We offer products in Browns, Blues, Greens, Grays and Reds. Some of the colored vinyl and TPE rubber rolls are not suggested for outside use and the colors will be affected by overexposure to sunlight.

Gym Flooring – Rolls vs. Interlocking Rubber Tiles?
This is a choice that is contingent on several factors:
-
- The shape of your home gym. If the room is rectangular then rolls will be an easier installation, since you can purchase rolls that are cut to length. Let’s assume that your garage home gym is a 20ft by 20ft area. Then, you would need 5 rolls that are 48” wide by 20 feet long. These rolls can be cut to length prior to shipment, which would reduce the need for you to fabricate at the site and will minimize product loss. In this case rolls are a lot easier to install. Most rubber flooring rolls are 36 or 48-inch wide, which makes matching the dimensions of a room really easy.
-
- The size of the gym. Smaller home fitness areas can quickly be deployed using interlocking tiles. These will be lighter and easier to install for those who may have a tough time handling large heavy rolled products. Larger home gyms will benefit using rolled products since rolls can be as long as 50-feet long and installing is a lot easier.
-
- The expected life of the gym. If your gym is a short-term commitment, perhaps you are renting the home, then interlocking tiles make more sense. You can install, remove, and re-install the tiles with minimal problems. Interlocking rubber tiles can adapt themselves to almost any room size or shape. While rolls that are cut to size for a specific room will have less flexibility, given that they are cut to fit for a precise gym floor. If your training area is in a part of a house that you expect to have in use as a gym for the long haul, then rolls are a far better product. As mentioned earlier, rubber flooring rolls can be shipped in cut-to-fit dimensions which will make installation super easy.
-
- Who is installing? Rolls will generally be heavier, larger and more difficult to handle. Given that the installer is more adept at handling heavier equipment, then rubber rolls make more sense. While tiles are lighter, since their sizes are smaller, and they are easier to move. If you are less likely to be able to handle heavy weights, then tiles will be the best option for your gym floors.

Using 4×6 Stall Mats in a Home Gym
4×6 mats are the new craze in gym flooring. These have traditionally been horse stall mats, but with a growing demand for thicker and more protective flooring in gyms, 4 x 6 rubber mats are now in demand. Since these are stand-alone mats, you should expect them to have seams that will show when the tiles are placed next to one another. There is no effective way to do away with this feature. Seam sealing and using adhesive won’t look good aesthetically and frankly are not effective. These tiles were never made in these sizes to be permanent flooring so gyms that use the 4 x6 stall mats are generally more blue collar like CrossFit gyms. These gyms are not concerned about being pretty, rather, they are looking for workhorse flooring products (pardon the pun) to protect their subfloors.
Our 4×6 tiles are available in 1/2 and 3/4-inch thicknesses and they exhibit incredible floor protection. We park 40,000 lbs. trucks on the top of the 4×6 tiles (Shark Tooth and Maxx Tuff) and do so night after night. And this is done in outdoor conditions, were the sun, rain, wind are constantly abusing these products. These 4×6 rubber mats do not show much wear and damage and we only replace them every two to three years. (photos and videos are provided here)
If you are opening a gym that will see a lot of abusive visitors, then the 4X6 rubber tiles are ideal for you. But if you are building a home gym, this is really overkill, except perhaps, for an area that dumbbells are used, or deadlifts are performed. In that case adding a tile or two to your garage gym floors is probably smart.

Heavy Duty Rubber: In even the roughest environments, the Shark Tooth rubber mat will act as a superb floor mat in terms of durability and general quality. You can expect these floor mats to reduce noise, impact, and damage to subfloors.
Recycled Mat: One of the great characteristics of recycled products is how environmentally friendly they are. Over 250 million tires are sent to the dump every year, this tire-derived product can “close the loop.”
All-Weather Floor Mat: Because of the recycled material these flooring mats are made of, as well as the strong endurance that rubber mats already display, Shark Tooth is a great choice no matter what weather you might be facing.
Shock Absorbing Gym Flooring
How well does rubber absorb shock, noise, and vibration? Rubber’s ability to absorb shock and sound is largely due to its elasticity and excellent tensile strength. Elasticity is a material’s propensity to regain its original shape after being subjected to force. Tensile strength refers to the amount of load or stress that rubber can handle until it stretches or breaks. It is measured by testing the rubber mat’s resistance to strain caused by applying mechanical loads to it. Rubber flooring is used in gyms because it is elastic and will protect the subfloor from the equipment above and vice versa. In this sense, rubber is a wear part because it will absorb the shock until the point of damage. When rubber flooring absorbs impact, it deadens the collision and hence absorbs the force of the impact. When a dumbbell hits the floor the rubber flooring will press backward to soften the impact as the granules of rubber absorb the energy. The bending of the rubber floor limits the amount of damage that can happen to the subfloors and dropped weights. Have you ever stretched a rubber band? This is because of the phenomenon called elasticity, and materials such as a rubber floor can absorb and deaden the shock and sound of impact. Obviously the thicker the material the less of the impact energy is transferred to the subfloors and the more the rubber flooring will reduce sound.
Perhaps you are doing a lot of Olympic power lifting. Or you are weightlifting in bench areas that are subject to possible dropped 80-lbs dumbbells. If you are looking for impact absorbing rubber flooring, then 4×6 tiles or stall mats are your best choice and this is so because of the ample thickness of these rubber mats. Four by six tiles are generally 3/4 or 1/2-inch thick, which makes them some of the thicker and more shock absorbing rubber floor mats products around.
“Maxx-Tuff” Heavy-Duty Mats
- Helps reduce noise and vibration
- Easy to clean with water and common soap
- Eco-friendly reclaimed floor that is affordable and very durable
- Ideal for use as gym equipment mats or any other application that sees a lot of heavy equipment
Heavy Duty Protection: If anyone has any doubts about how thick and durable these mats are, they only need to take one good look at them. These thick mats are designed to be used for heavy-duty applications. For example, if they are used as gym equipment mats, they will easily absorb the shock and pressure of heavy weight equipment being placed on them without suffering a scratch. Better yet, the floors underneath these heavy-duty mats will also be secure from damage.
Designed for Traction: All across the surface of this 4 x 6 rubber mat is a unique honeycomb design. The purpose of this design is to provide a better grip and more traction for feet. More traction means more safety and a far lower likelihood of slipping and falling. Rubber itself provides more traction for feet, but when it is formed into this design, this mat’s anti-slip quality significantly and noticeably improves.
Home Gym in a Basement
Rubber flooring is ideal for basement gyms, why? Most basements flood and if they don’t flood, the basement floors are exposed to constant moisture. Carpeting, wood flooring, even some laminates are not water resistant and can be damaged by the presence of moisture. In addition, if these types of floors are not clean and dry, they will offer an ecosystem for mold and mildew. Rubber flooring is completely resistant to moisture and any volume of water does not affect the rubber surface. If a flood does occur, then the flooring needs to be removed, the area dried, and the rubber flooring cleaned and reinstalled. For this reason, adhering rubber flooring to basement floors is not recommended. We suggest rubber floors for any type of basement space. Rubber surfaces are affordable, DIY and ultra-durable.
Since rubber flooring should not be glued down in an environment like a basement, we highly suggest using double-sided carpet tape to hold the product down. Since rubber mats tend to be heavy, generally very little tape is required. If you do install rolls, then the entry points or the perimeter of a standalone rubber mat are good places to add the tape.
Another consideration in a basement gym is the lack of ventilation. Rubber surfaces have a scent, there is no way to avoid this. Some of the scent will go away with time, and some of it you will get used to. But the lack of ventilation in a space will increase the timeline of the dissipation of the scent of rubber matting. If your space cannot be better ventilated then you could install less rubber matting and focus on rubber in the areas where impacts may be a concern. Areas that heavy weights may be lifted and dropped or where heavy equipment of machinery is placed are a good place to start.
Basement areas are perfect for gym because the subfloors tend to be concrete, and applying rubber floors directly on top of concrete is easy. In addition, when choosing gym equipment, you are not limited by its weight since both rubber surfacing and the concrete can handle any type of gym equipment. If a space is floored with wood for example, regardless of the thickness of the rubber flooring, dropping a 50-pound dumbbell could cause damage to the wood floors.
Here are some commonly asked questions about basement gyms:
-
- How to make a basement gym brighter? Mirrors and other types of reflective surfaces are a great way to lighten up a basement gym. Glass, acrylic, and glossy finishes and invest in lighter color equipment and furniture as well. Consider using a glass tables, transparent acrylic chairs, or glossy bookshelves to increase overall brightness. The power of mirrors must again be mentioned here. This is a basement home gym room’s secret weapon. Mirrors not only will make a home gym feel bigger but they will reflect any light that comes its way.
-
- Is it safe to have a gym in the basement? Can I work out in my basement? Absolutely. As long as the basement is structurally safe, inhabiting it and building a home gym is a great way of making use of the space. Basements, especially in older homes, tend to be large and open, providing ample room for various activities. With proper planning, you can transform the space into a functional and enjoyable area. Adding a home gym not only maximizes the basement’s utility but also increases the overall value of your home. Just ensure proper insulation, ventilation, and moisture control to maintain a comfortable and safe environment.
-
- How to ventilate a basement gym? Portable air conditioners are a great way to cool down your basement and portable heaters work well during the winter. If you have windows or a way to run some ducts to the outside, ventilating a basement gym is easy. Consider installing a high-quality air cleaner to keep the air fresh and dry during intense workouts.
-
- What colors are best for basement home gym? Lighter paint colors like off-whites, light neutrals, pales, and pastels give the illusion of larger, brighter rooms. Consider a clean white paint with warm, sunny undertones. Paint walls a light color or pick a bright wallpaper to spruce the walls with lighter tones. Lay down flooring that is colored and is not black. You want colors that will reflect light but also make a room feel airy and bright. Light neutral colors with warm undertones are best for this type of room.

Backyard & Outdoor Home Gym Flooring
Backyard gyms are some of the most enjoyable fitness areas to workout in. One can row, use a recumbent bike, lift weights, and even engage in short bursts of sprints. Generally, more space is available when a gym is built outside. The existing floors in an outdoor area could range from concrete to an outdoor wood deck, balcony, grass or dirt.
-
- What type of flooring is suggested for outdoor gyms? Regardless of the use, we suggest recycled rubber mats. Since recycled rubber mats are made from ground up tires, they demonstrate the same qualities rubber tires do. Just in the United States, there are roughly 250 million tires discarded every year. Tires are designed to travel 40,000 to 50,000 miles over blacktop, and last perhaps 3-5 years in outdoor conditions. This means in the heat of Death Valley, California in temperatures of up to 130F and in Buffalo, New York and in well below freezing temperatures. Tires are expected to perform in these conditions when going over very abrasive roads. Do you think your outdoor gym is any more abusive?A recycled rubber mat is literally ground tires rubber that has been put back together with a polyurethane binder. This is the same material that most outdoor playground flooring is made from. We highly recommend you invest in recycled rubber products when installing outdoor rubber flooring.
-
- How do I install outdoor rubber gym flooring? Since gluing the product down to your wood deck or your balcony is probably not the best long-term decision, your best bet is to float the rubber mats on top of any subsurface you have. You could apply some double-sided tape to hold the product, but a good rain will effectively discount any tape. Since rubber floors are heavy, we suggest you just float them on top of your existing outdoor floors. Most outdoor gyms grow or move or have their equipment moved around. This results in the need for flooring that is easy to assemble or to roll up. Therefore, laying the gym rubber floors down without adhesive is the best possible strategy.
-
- Can you put gym flooring over concrete? Yes, however metal gym equipment does tend to get scuffed and scraped by concrete. Rubber floors are made to safeguard both the concrete floors and the expensive equipment that is on top of them. We highly suggest you cover your concrete floors with rubber mats and flooring to extend the life of your gym equipment and your outdoor floors.

Home Gym in a Garage
Garages were built to house cars but are ideal for gyms! A garage is designed to protect cars and trucks from rain, snow and the sun and this protection is needed for gym equipment as well. It also is the storage space of modern homes and the birthplace of many innovations by hobbyist and entrepreneurs. Companies like Disney, Hewlett Packard, Apple and Microsoft all started in America’s garages.
Anything is possible in America’s garages. You can dream small or big, and then bring it to life in an American garage!
-
- How can I turn my garage into a gym? Since garages have concrete floors, it is very easy to apply rubber gym flooring to their surface. You can convert some or all of your garage into a gym. Assuming you have a two car garage, we suggest starting out on one side of the garage and add your equipment so that there is room for a car to be parked on the opposite side.
-
- Is it safe to workout in garage? As long as you do not have a running car parked in the garage, the garage should be safe place to workout. Working out near exhaust fumes exposes one to lethal carbon monoxide (CO) gas. CO is present in large amounts in vehicle exhaust fumes. Carbon monoxide poisoning occurs when carbon monoxide builds up in the blood. When too much carbon monoxide is in the air, the body replaces the oxygen in the red blood cells with carbon monoxide. This can lead to serious tissue damage, or even death. Please refrain from working out in a garage that has had fumes due to car exhaust.
-
- How to ventilate a garage gym? If you have doors or windows, open them. Use natural outdoor air by opening doors and windows as much as you can to bring in fresh air. It is always better to open them wide but even having a window cracked open slightly can help. Floor and ceiling fans also work to keep your garage stay well-ventilated and do so at a minimum expenditure.
-
- Will gym equipment rust in a garage? Storing metal gym equipment is ideal for workouts because it is so accessible but garages and sheds see a lot of moisture. Humidity, water, salt and other corrosive substances, as well as temperature changes lead to metal corrosion. Controlling the moisture that enters the garage is the first step. This should be easy by keeping the garage closed when rain and snow are in season. Regularly maintaining and inspecting metal surfaces is key to stopping rust. Dirt and debris on the surface of the metal can cause increased chemical reactions with the surroundings and speed up damage to gym equipment. Regular inspection and maintenance and cleaning can help create a barrier against corrosive elements like moisture or greases. This not only preserves the value of the gym equipment, but also ensures its longevity and safe usage!
-
- How to make a garage gym look better? First, declutter and organize. We cannot underestimate the importance of this. A room with ordered fixtures and furniture always looks bigger and better. Use accents and lighting to highlight areas and bring out the colors of your gym equipment. Decorating a gym with mirrors and art can be a fashionable answer to a bland garage. They can brighten a dark garage and make a smaller space look much bigger. And they add this cheerful elegance at a very affordable cost.

Home Gyms Over Carpet
-
- Can you put a home gym on carpet? Rubber mats generally do well protecting carpet from gym equipment and home gyms can be put on top of carpet that has a layer of rubber flooring on it. Rubber gym mats will reduce the exposure of impact, moisture, dirt and grease (e.g., oils that exude from equipment) on the carpeted floors.
Installing rubber mats in zones that can expose the carpet to moisture from sweating or dropped water bottles is probably a good idea. You do not want to expose your carpeting to any type of moisture or spills. When moisture breaches the carpet strands, it causes them to swell and alter, causing discoloration and worse, damage. Stains from spills or leaks can become permanent if not cleaned up and dealt with. Mold and mildew growth is a clear possibility if the wet area is not dried immediately. Moisture creates an ideal breeding ground for decay and fungi. Rubber mats will keep the moisture on top of the rubber surfacing and will be a protective shield.
-
- Will rubber flooring damage or stain carpet? Good quality rubber flooring should not bleed and will not mark your carpeting. Stay away from cheap foam and plastics as they are not good quality products and will bleed when exposed to simple elements like moisture or cleaning agents. Rubber, per its name, does rub-off when an abrasive force is applied. And recycled rubber floors can shed crumb which can be difficult to clean. We suggest you install vulcanized rubber flooring since it is denser than recycled products and it does not shed.
-
- How to turn a carpeted room into a home gym? Once you have chosen the equipment you intend to use, you should choose the appropriate rubber matting. The heavier your equipment the thicker of a rubber mat that you should install. This is also the case with the thickness of the carpet. The thicker and shaggier your carpeting pile, the thicker your rubber floors should be. If you intend to add a treadmill or an elliptical, we highly suggest rubber mats under the equipment.
-
- How is rubber flooring installed over carpet? Rubber mats or floors are just floated on top of carpet. You should not glue, or tape down the mat onto your carpeting surface. Rubber flooring rolls or tiles, when interlocked, are heavy and will stay down under their own weight, hence there is no need to hold them down with anything.
-
- Should I remove carpet for home gym? This is not necessary unless you intend to install very heavy equipment or engage in power lifting. In this kind of a scenario either you need to move the gym to a more appropriate location or add very heavy rubber flooring to protect your carpet. If you intend to use the space for yoga, stretching, calisthenics, or with light equipment, then covering it with rubber tiles or rubber floors should resolve any concerns about damaging your carpeting.

Home Gym on Wood Floors
-
- Can you put a home gym on a wood floor? Yes, but there are several caveats. Anytime you install a home gym on wood floors, it assumes that your demands and abuse of the floors will be minimal. Wood floors are expensive and if subject to heavy impact could be easily damaged. This is regardless of the type and the thickness of the rubber surfacing added to the top of the wood floors. Generally anything under 1” thickness rubber matting will not protect wood or laminate flooring from dropped 40lbs dumbbells, must less barbells that can load much heavier weights. Now if your treadmill or home gym equipment is stationary and does not have parts that impact the floor surface, then a 3/8-inch-thick rubber floor should be a good shielding layer for your wood floors. Moisture and impact will leave more than a mark on lumber and we suggest moving your home gym if your floors are made out of wood or laminate.
-
- Does rubber damage wood flooring? No, rubber floors will not affect wood flooring if they are floated above them. For obvious reason if you use adhesives or tapes, these will affect the top surface of your flooring. But floating good quality rubber floors will not affect the surface below. Rubber will only leave a mark, if it is “rubber” on the surface of the wood.
-
- Will rubber mats damage or stain wood? No, rubber flooring does not bleed or leave a residue unless other chemicals and agents trigger a chemical reaction. The easy way is not to use caustic cleaners with your rubber or wood floors. Do not subject the rubber to oils, greases or aggressive cleaning agents.

Home Gyms Over Tile
-
- Can you put gym flooring over tile? Yes, and it is recommended that rubber flooring be added to tiled areas that you intend to add gym equipment. Ceramic and Terra Cota tiles are very pristine and can easily be damaged. Generally, floors are more prone than walls to impact damage because of falling objects and the foot traffic that traverses the floors. In a gym dropped equipment, falling water bottles, and hopping body parts are a very common feature. Flooring tiles can crack or even break with repeated blows. Therefore, adding a thick rubber surfacing membrane is a smart insurance policy for your floors.
-
- How do I protect my tiles from gym weights? Add rubber floors in areas that you expect to see wear. And try not to be abusive in this type of a home gym. Calisthenics, stretching, core workouts should be OK with a rubber flooring that has some decent volume in thickness. But lifting heavy dumbbells or barbells on top of tiled surfaces, even if protected with rubber floors, is not recommended.
-
- Will rubber mats damage or stain tile? No, good quality rubber flooring will never stain any subsurface. As noted earlier if there are unusual chemical agents or corrosive detergents used on the floors, then there maybe instances of product failure. Rubber matting in itself will not bleed or stain any floors. Some recycled rubbers will shed rubber crumb, but that is more of nuisance that can be vacuumed than a permanent scar on your floors.
-
- Can I put a treadmill on a tile floor? Yes, treadmills, ellipticals, stationary bikes, and rowing machines are instances of equipment that does not move when operated. If you have good layer of rubber matting under the machines, the use should not affect your tiled floors.
