What to Look at When Reviewing Art Studio Basement Flooring

Thinking about setting aside some space in your basement for an art studio? While painting is a great way to express your individual creativity and promote a relaxing and stress free environment, there are certainly some things to consider when picking out flooring for a basement. While there are many basement flooring options, rubber stands out as a cost effective, do it yourself alternative to studio floors that are difficult to install and are easily damaged. While other flooring could certainly be looked at, rubber provides the essentials for any beginning to advanced artist, and excels at many factors that should be considered when deciding upon flooring for a basement. Cheap, reliable, and waterproof rubber mats will allow you to concentrate on your art rather than on your floor, and will prove to be the most perfectly suited of any of the basement flooring options for your art studio.  Here’s what to consider when looking at the flooring:

  • Water Resistant Floors – The first thing to consider is what types of waterproof rubber mats you should be looking at. Basements get wet and floors that will not be damaged due to floods are a smart investment. Carpet, wood, laminates are not suggested.  If you are planning on using water based paint, recycled or granulated mats will fit your needs perfectly.  Basements are damp and rubber floors are highly suggested for floors that experience excessive moisture.
  • Comfort – Another important factor is anti-fatigue. Artists are often on their feet for hours, which can be uncomfortable and can cause stress to the spine and joints; risking damage to your entire skeletal structure. Rubber naturally compresses (unlike concrete or hardwood) when a force, such as your body weight, is exerted on top of it. This natural compression eases stress to your bones and ligaments, which in turn

allows you to stand without discomfort for longer periods of time. The thicker the rubber mat, the more compression and anti-fatigue you will experience, which will allow you to concentrate on what is on the canvas rather than what is under your feet.

  • Non-Slip Floors – Finally, slip resistance and impact absorption are important. Textured rubber flooring allows for grip even when the ground is covered in slippery art supplies, and will absorb a potion of the impact if an art project is accidentally dropped. While certainly not full proof, rubber provides grip even when wet, and protects falling objects more than many other basement flooring options.
  • Just as with anti-fatigue, the thicker the mat, the more absorption of impact. So when looking at rubber flooring for a basement, remember to choose thickness and surface texture carefully to suite your needs.

To reiterate, there are many things to consider when picking out flooring products that may not be intuitive at first. Many artists forget how tiring simply standing up for extended periods can be, and often slip resistance is

overlooked when comparing flooring products.  Art is demanding enough, and your floor should not impede upon the creative process. The flooring for a basement art studio should allow the artist to create uninhibitedly, which is why waterproof rubber mats are ideal.  Easy to clean, cheap to install, and comfortable, no other basement flooring option excels in so many aspects that make the perfect art studio floor. Remember, determine what your specific needs are as an artist, and pick out the perfect rubber mats for your area.
